Abstract (Summary) :
This chapter introduces the discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism and its implementation framework from the combat modeling perspective. It reviews the combat modeling and simulation practice with the formalism support. The chapter introduces further details of the DEVS formalism and the DEVSim++ framework in the combat modeling context. It walks through a case study of modeling a naval air defense scenario with the DEVS formalism and an implementation framework to show the design and the implementation of a sample combat model. First, the walkthrough shows how the DEVS formalism is utilized to formally and transparently represent a combat model. Second, the walk-through demonstrates how a DEVS implementation framework corresponds to the DEVS formalism and facilitates model implementation. Third, the walk-through explains a simulation procedure using a reusable and general purpose simulation engine included in DEVSim++ and provides a sample battle experimentation using this DEVS based approach.
